Outdoor Billboard Material Guide: How to Choose PVC Flex Banner
Why the wrong material fails your billboard early
Outdoor billboards face UV, rain, wind load and temperature swings year-round. Too-low GSM tears under tension; the wrong light-transmission type dims at night or leaks light; poor wind design rips the whole face off in storm season. Picking the right substrate is step one to a 2–3 year outdoor life and lower rework cost.
Three steps to the right flex banner
1. Lighting type
Frontlit (no internal light) → frontlit banner; Backlit (lightbox) → backlit fabric for even glow; Two-sided / no see-through → blockout.
2. Wind environment
Tall buildings, coast, typhoon zones → mesh (wind-permeable, lighter); normal city → solid frontlit/blockout is fine.
3. Budget & replacement cycle
Permanent billboards → 510–610 gsm heavyweight; short-term events/rental → 440 gsm economy.

Tip: higher GSM = thicker and more tear-resistant; wider roll = fewer seams. For large billboards, use 510 gsm+ heavyweight.
Sqm estimation & wind load
How much fabric you need
Area (㎡) = width × height × 1.08 (bleed + hemming). E.g. 18m × 6m ≈ 18×6×1.08 ≈ 116 ㎡. Order by net size + hemming allowance.
Wind load handling
In windy zones prefer mesh (wind-permeable). For solid fabric, add more tie-down points, reinforced hems and eyelets ≤ 50 cm apart, with tensioned fixing.
Installation & care
- Let ink cure 24h before mounting to avoid cracking.
- Double-stitched hem + metal eyelets; add corner patches.
- Check tension and eyelets quarterly; reinforce before typhoon.
- Clean with soft brush + neutral detergent; no strong solvents.
